Aerosaf DHB
Case Study
The world's largest manufacturer of landing gear and braking systems historically used Castrol Ilocut 219 in an arduous deep hole boring operation. The materials used in the production of these large aerospace components are high strength steel, titanium and aluminium. AeroSaf DHB was able to replace the previous product as a “drop-in” whilst providing a significant range of benefits both technically and environmentally for the customer.
BACKGROUND
The existing product, Castrol Ilocut 219, was based on chlorinated paraffin, which was previously accepted because it provided high levels of cutting performance in difficult machining processes. The disadvantage of chlorinated oils is the breakdown of the chlorine under load, which significantly increases the TAN number of in-use oil. The TAN number is the measure of acid that forms in the oil leading to premature replacement and disposal of the fluid. If the acid is left unchecked, it can cause corrosion so it needs to be monitored every 4-6 months. Aerosaf DHB on the other hand requires less monitoring and replaced every 24 months.
Unlike traditional chlorinated oil, which has many disadvantages both environmentally and financially leading to incineration at end of life, Aerosaf DHB is environmentally acceptable and certified to PCAS 4001 standard. Aerosaf DHB is truly unique and exceeds the standards of stress corrosion testing in all three categories by Safran for steel, titanium and aluminium.

AeroSaf DHB Details
Aerosaf DHB is a premium quality, high-performance, deep hole boring fluid designed for hard machine materials such as high alloy steels and aerospace alloys including titanium. It provides class-leading cooling and EP performance. Aerosaf DHB has full PCAS approval and is one of a unique range of oils meeting stress corrosion testing across a full range of aerospace materials.
Based around the highest quality synthetic hydrocarbon base stocks, Aerosaf DHB is mineral-oil free and, therefore, inherently resistant to oxidation and thermal degradation, which can result in the formation of sticky deposits and varnish. Its product life is thereby extended while ensuring cleanliness and efficient swarf removal.
